For Release - Hahira Middle Technology Students Win at Nationals
posted Jun 29, 2018, 2:44 AM by LAVERNE ROME
The Hahira Middle School Technology Student Association (TSA) finished off a remarkable year by attending the 40th annual National TSA Conference in Atlanta, Georgia. Ten students from the team that won the Georgia TSA state championship back in March, traveled to Atlanta on June 22nd to compete against students from all across the United States, Germany, Turkey, and Japan.
Despite most events having 50-100 entries, Hahira Middle made the semifinals in five events and won trophies in two.
Sisters Molly and Maggie Davis won first place for their Construction Challenge project in which they built a sensory room for special needs students. Isabel Autrey and Ruby Ruff received a third-place trophy (their second national trophy in two years) for their interactive Children's Story entry titled Dana the Dino Ranger. Ruby also placed in the top ten along with her sister, Lyla Ruff, in an event titled Forensic Science. After the girls made it to the semi-final round by having one of the top scores on the written test, they earned a spot on stage by showing off their ability to use forensic technology to solve a mock crime scene. Hank Peagler and Zayne Ridge also cracked the top ten with their Community Service Video entry that documented their fundraising efforts for the American Cancer Society.
Hank and Zayne also made the semifinals for their Inventions and Innovation project that featured an app titled Bus Buddy that would assist substitute school bus drivers in the navigation of their route. The final semifinalist was Jon Liu in the event titled Video Game Design that required him develop, build and launch an E-rated online game. Sixth graders Ford Scott and Wade Lavender competed in Dragster Challenge, CADD, Coding, System Control, and Website Design throughout the five-day event.
These students, along with the support of their parents, teachers and community partners proved they have what it takes to compete and lead in a technical world.

School Choice Window Reopens through July 11
posted Jun 27, 2018, 8:10 PM by AL ROWELL [ updated Jun 27, 2018, 8:11 PM ]
It is the goal of Lowndes County Schools to provide as much choice to our residents as economically possible. However, the system must first meet the needs of students within the school attendance zones before allowing school choice transfers and accepting new tuition students. The growth of our system and the continuation of austerity budget cuts can make this extremely difficult especially at our larger schools.
At this time the system is accepting requests for school attendance zone changes and tuition requests – both for qualifying property owners and non-qualifying property owners - for the 2018-2019 school year. Parents/guardians have until July 11, 2018 to complete and submit a request.
More information and forms can be found on the Student Registration Page.

The Lowndes County School System is proud to announce the achievement and status of the Georgia School Boards Association's (GSBA) 2018 Quality School Board recognition.
The recognition program was designed to showcase best practices in school governance and leadership. GSBA recognizes good school board governance to foster educational community cultures in order to advance student learning and achievement.
The Lowndes County School Board met and/or exceeded the criteria set forth by GSBA to earn this honor of a 2018 Quality Board. The criteria may be reviewed at https://gsba.com/wp-content/uploads/2018/03/FY18-Board-Recognition-Chart.pdf
The GSBA Governance Team Recognition Program was developed by Georgia superintendents and board members based on the state board of education's standards for effective governance to recognize quality leadership.
In 1998, the Georgia School Boards Association was one of the first school board associations in the nation to develop a program of standards for local boards of education.
The GSBA Board recognition program is a three-year, three-tiered program. For more information on the program, you may visit the GSBA website for awards and recognition. https://gsba.com/board-development/awards-recognition/

Petition for A High School Diploma
On March 30, 2015, Governor Nathan Deal signed into law House Bill 91. House Bill 91 retroactively eliminates the Georgia High School Graduation Test as a requirement for students who took the test between 1994 (when the test was established) and the present. State Board Rule in 2011 eliminated the test as a requirement for graduation, but that elimination did not extend to students who had already taken the test. House Bill 91 extends back to all graduation tests, beginning with the Basic Skills Test which was administered to students who enrolled for the first time in grade 9 during the 1981-1982 school year.
House Bill 91 only affects those persons who did not earn a high school diploma SOLELY for the reason of being unable to pass the GHSGT, the GHSWT, or its predecessor(s). If you did not get a diploma due to failure to meet specific high school course unit requirements, this law does not apply to you. Linked here are a copy of House Bill 91, the Petition for High School Diploma form, the Diploma Petition Timeline, and the HB91-High School Graduation Diploma Petition-Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ) document.
